Uniform/Code of Dress

The Arnold Hill Spencer Academy uniform is a formal style of dress.

We believe it’s really important that all our students wear the same uniformed clothing as research shows this helps reduce conflict, improves behaviour and supports a positive ethos (source: the Education Endowment Foundation). It also helps to reduce competition for brands between students.

To ensure fairness and parity, from September 2025, students who arrive to school with incorrect/incomplete uniform will be loaned uniform for that day. Incorrect jewellery will be removed, securely stored by staff and collected by students at the end of the school day. We understand that there will be exceptional circumstances where adaptations will need to be made. Short-term adaptations will require a note or an email from a parent/carer to the student’s Tutor and Head of Year.

The full uniform/dress requirements can be found on our Uniform Policy (through the links below), but here are some key pointers to help you prepare your child:

  • White formal shirt/blouse – this must be tucked into their trousers/kilt with the top button done up
  • Formal tailored black trousers – leggings and tracksuit bottoms are not acceptable formal wear
  • Skirts – the Arnold Hill Spencer Academy kilt is now compulsory for all year groups
  • Footwear – only formal black shoes (not boots) should be worn. To help guide parents/students, footwear from sports brands are not formal and so are not accepted as school uniform. For example Nike, Converse, Puma etc. Crocs or equivalent styles of informal footwear are not allowed to be worn in school
  • Ties – these should be the AHSA clip on tie
  • Blazers – must always be worn on entry to the academy, to tutor time and between all lessons (but can be removed during lessons)
  • Coats – these should provide protection for your child in bad weather. Informal fashion wear, including hoodies (pullover or zip), tracksuit tops, denim or leather jackets are not considered uniform and should not be brought to school
  • Bags – every student needs to bring a school bag every day. These should be a backpack or rucksack style (not handbags, large purses, satchels etc) and needs to be large enough to hold all their equipment and PE kit
  • Hair/Make Up/Nails – hair must be of a natural colour, make up must be natural and not be obvious, nails should be natural colours (i.e. clear) and must not protrude beyond the end of the finger. False/gel/acrylic nails are not permitted.
  • Jewellery – a single pair of plain stud (i.e. not hoop/chain) earrings can be worn (one in each lobe), but these must be removed for PE. A traditional watch is encouraged, but smartwatches are not permitted. No other jewellery should be visible.

Please note that students are urged not to bring any valuable items into the academy. All personal items are brought at the owner’s risk, and the academy cannot accept responsibility for any loss, theft, or damage of these. This includes items of jewellery, mobile phones, laptops etc.
